This beautiful little book encapsulates the long, fascinating history of the many plans to span the Avon Gorge with a new bridge, culminating in 1864 with the completion of Bristol's most famous landmark by Isambard Kingdom Brunel - an achievement he never lived to see. This guide is packed with information yet is so accessibly written that young readers as well as engineering enthusiasts will find much to inform and enjoy. It includes well over a hundred images, many of them rarely seen or previously unpublished, as well as fine contemporary paintings of the gorge by Samuel Jackson and Samuel Colman and some superb early photographs.
Copies are on sale at the bridge Visitor Centre (open 10.00-5.00 daily) and at other local outlets. Brunel's great-great-great grandson Isambard Thomas, who wrote the foreword to the book, was present at the launch on 1st April 2008.
