CLIFTON SUSPENSION BRIDGE TO BE CLOSED DURING BALLOON FIESTA NIGHT GLOWS

The Bridge Master, David Anderson, has issued a reminder that the city’s historic landmark will once again be closed to all pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles for two evenings during this summer’s Bristol International Balloon Fiesta in the nearby Ashton Court Estate.

“I urge people to plan ahead if they are attending the evening events at the fiesta on Thursday 8th August and Saturday 10th August” he said. “The bridge will close to all pedestrians, cyclists and traffic at 6 pm on both these evenings and it will remain closed until midnight.”

Evening closures during the fiesta were first implemented nine years ago following concerns that the 149-year-old landmark could suffer potentially unacceptable structural stresses due to the sheer volume of pedestrian traffic.

“A crowd of pedestrians on the roadway of the bridge creates a far greater loading than normal car traffic and this could cause damage to the bridge and injury to its users,” explained Mr Anderson.

“As in previous years, we have agreed with Bristol City Council, North Somerset Council, Avon and Somerset Police and the event organisers that to ensure the safety of the public and the bridge, the bridge should be closed for the Thursday and Saturday evenings.

Bridge closure times during this year’s International Balloon Fiesta will be:

{C}{C}q   {C}{C}Thursday 8th August from 6 pm until midnight;

{C}{C}q   {C}{C}Saturday 10th August from 6 pm until midnight.
