Bristol’s Clifton Suspension Bridge will close for 2 days at the end of this month to allow important maintenance work to take place.

The bridge will be closed to vehicles and cyclists from 9.30am to 4.00pm on Tuesday 30th and Wednesday 31st August.  A diversion route will be signed, using Bridge Valley Road, Brunel Way and A369 Rownham Hill.

Bridge Master David Anderson said “During these bridge closures pedestrians will still be able to use the bridge.  However cycling will be prohibited as maintenance work will be taking place on the bridge.  Cyclists may dismount and walk across the bridge, however as only one narrow footway will be open they are requested to avoid using the bridge if possible.

“The closures are necessary to allow the completion of the restoration works to the Leigh Woods tower, which have been ongoing through the summer.  The masonry has been cleaned and repointed, and repairs carried out to the roof structure, the drainage and the access ladders.  The final stage is the removal of the scaffolding where it spans across the road.

“The opportunity will also be taken to carry out other bridge maintenance tasks and high level inspection.

“Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust wishes to apologise for the inconvenience which these closures will cause people.  We hope that by re-opening the road during the morning and evening peak periods and overnight we will minimise disruption.
