The Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust is reviewing the access requirements to the main chain anchorages to determine if they can be improved, making it easier for engineers to inspect. These accesses are in the middle of the carriageway and therefore any inspection needs to be carried out during a road closure.
To enable this review, the bridge will be closed to traffic overnight on Tuesday 22nd October from 7.30pm until 6.00am on Wednesday 23rd October.
A diversion route will be signed, using Bridge Valley Road, Brunel Way and A369 Rownham Hill.
Bridge Master, Trish Johnson, said “We will be reviewing the access locations at both ends of the bridge with an aim to improving them for our engineers in the future. While the bridge is closed there will also be some filming on the bridge – making use of the closure.
During this bridge closure pedestrians will still be able to use the bridge, but cycling will be prohibited. Cyclists may dismount and walk across the bridge, but please be mindful of the pedestrians also using the narrow footways. Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust wishes to apologise for the inconvenience which this closure will cause. We hope that by carrying the work out at night and re-opening in time for the morning peak period we will minimise disruptions to motorists.”
